Is it bad to run a DVD player through a VCR? A friend of mine says it is but.. he's an idiot and a liar! I know that it can distort the colors and what not but does it cause physical damage to either the DVD player of the VCR?

I run my DVD through my VCR and it doesn't distort the color as long as you don't try to record while playing the DVD. This protection is called Macrovision.

I have a pretty sweet DVD player and don't want to damage it. It plays NTSC/PAL, All regions and divX/Xvid.. so, I'm wondering if it can bypass the macrovision

From http://www.repairfaq.org/filipg/LINK/F_MacroVision1.html#MACROVISION_004
4.8) Can Macrovision damage my equipment? Can I attenuate it?
I've heard that the protection consists of very bright pulses, some 2-3 times the maximum allowable brightness. Can it damage my equipment? Can attenuation remove the protection?
The brightness is actually only about 15% over the normal white level, so no harm will be done. Simply attenuating the signal won't work, it's not the brightness alone that does the trick.

Assuming you are using the correct cables, it wont damage your VCR. I would try to do it the other way around though, since the picture quality of the DVD wight be degraded by passing it through a VCR (though not necessarily), but the DVD player would never degrade the VCR's signal. I assume you are trying to record off your DVD onto your VCR? Best way to accomplish this is to get an All-In-Wonder video card (or similar) and record through your computer.
