Medicine Hat trades Riley Day to Brandon

Medicine Hat, AB – Medicine Hat Tigers announce today they have traded 19-year-old defenseman Riley Day to the Brandon Wheat Kings for 17-year-old Kevin Undershute and a fourth round bantam draft pick in 2006.

Undershute is a product of the Medicine Hat Minor Hockey Association and currently playing for Brooks Bandits of the AJHL.

"The Medicine Hat Tigers would like to thank Riley for his three seasons spent with the organization and wish him all the best playing in his home town for the Wheat Kings," said Tigers' general manager Mike Moore.

Kevin Undershute has committed to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, so is this trade for a draft pick or is there a chance that he still may play in the Hat?

The team has signed three new Canadian recruits. Steve Van Oosten, Kevin Undershute and Chad Johnson will join the Nanooks next season.

I talked with GM Mike Moore yesterday and he said there is a slight chance the Tiger's would have Undershute with them next year...slight. Truth of the matter is this trade was a positioning trade opening up room for the Tiger's to pull another deal for another d-man (possibly Chris Schlenker out of Prince Albert).

Riley Day is out for up to 3 months with a lacerated kidney so really Brandon is also looking down the road in this deal. The only immediate help Tiger's get is freeing up space and of course the batam draft pick.

Kelly McCrimmon was quoted in the Brandon paper that there was no chance that Undershute would ever play in Brandon while there was a slight chance he may consider playing in Medicine Hat over his NCAA scholarship (since it is his hometown). Riley Day is expected back for March 1 in time for the stretch run and playoffs. He also gives the Wheat Kings another 19 year old (overager for next year) as they only had three (Webb, Stone, Fehr) and Stone and Fehr likely won't be back next year.
