WJC Gold Medal GDT: Canada vs. Russia

This thread makes the message boards where I'm chatting about USC-Oklahoma seem impartial. And that one is nothing but Sooners and Trojans fans yelling at each other.

Maybe people like me should just leave, so that some of these homers can discuss all they want, without irritating second opinions ;)

Please don't get this locked guys. There's a bunch of us who can't see this game and are relying on reports here as the only way of doing so.

Considering that most Canadians (and MOST people on this board) are very knowledgable about the game, I think we have a pretty good idea of what is and what is not a dive. I mean come on, we've been watching the Russians for years. ;)

And I think you have a pretty good idea that it is your team playing in this game and getting called for penalties. Surely you can admit that there is some bias involved here.

a brief first period unbiased recap

canada comes out to start the game on a mission and on a nifty drop pass getzlaf scores the first goal to get the crowd into the game. shortly after russia goes on a 5-3 in which glass and phaneuf come up big to preserve the lead. the tournaments best power play looks very average and (more significantly) alexander ovechkin looks very average. shortly after canada goes on their first powerplay where danny svret makes it a 2-0 game off of kind of a fluke goal where he banked it off the goaltender. ovechkin starts to take matters into his own hands and instantly transforms into a tough robocop like enforcer laying some nice hits. while his team mates are confusing the arena with the dive tank ovechkin attempts to get his team going by taking the body. a couple minutes before the period expires russia gets one back on a screened jeff glass. period ends with jeff carter taking a huge run at one of the russian defensemen which leads to a little scrum at the end between carter and malkin.

total shots by ovechkin: 0 shots
total offsides by ovechkin: 2 times
total powerplay oppurtunties by russians: 4 oppurtunities
watching phaneuf take off ovechkins head (prelude to the second period): priceless

No. Clutching takes place from behind. Standing someone up is a good thing defensively. It was when I was in Pee-Wee, anyway.

I don't see much diving either. But then, I make it a point not to listen to the announcers. I like McGuire et al, but they're totally biased towards us. That Ovechkin / Bergeron hit is a perfect example, as someone said above they both hit each other, and it was even. If they called that as Bergeron hitting Ovechkin, they're biased.

It is. And Canada is showcasing the best junior talent amassed on one team in a very long time. That is just an awesome lineup through and through. The Russians sound like midgets out there. The only time they have done anything is when they have been put on the powerplay. Canada definitely has produced an incredible team.

Even though his team had a substantial edge in power play time he was in capable of turning on the red light and giving his team a kick start. Look at the Canadian side and you see the way real stars perform in big games.

Since ESPN was only showing the USA WJC games in the USA, they had their own commentators for this tournament to offer the USA content.

We determined yesterday that since Disney/ESPN owns a 30-something % chunk of TSN, that ESPN could very easily have just shown the TSN feed in the USA today so the US fans could see the medal games.....but of course, they didn't care to do that. :banghead:

I think the score of this game has probably sealed up the goaltending award for Schwarz. To hold Canada to only 3 goals on over 40 shots was outstanding.
