Have you watched the rest of the tournament? The U.S. thumped the Swedes and were down a goal to Russia in the 3rd period of the semis. They didn't throw in the towel. The team competed, and lost to a superior team, in a game Montoya played very well in. I think they'll be pumped to win bronze and avenge an earlier loss to the Czechs.

If the whole game is as exciting as the third period of the USA/Czech game the other day, this ought to be one of the best games in ages.

I guess i wonder how mentally "into it" the U.S is going to be for this game.I know they are capable of winning this game but i just get this feeling that anything other then gold isn't enough for them this year.....this team has tasted winning and does'nt want anything else i think, especially being at home.I think the Czechs will be a bit more motivated and win.The crowd has to get behind them to give them that boost i think they will need.

:shakehead Come on. Have you watched the rest of the tournament? A good midget team may have given the Swedes a game. The Swedes have zero passion. The US had nearly half a game to tie up the score and couldn't even sustain any offensive pressure against Russia. Russia is not a superior team to the Americans. In this tournament the Americans had A: terrible goaltending, B: poor coaching, C: no team chemistry/unity, and not the passion/intensity we are used to seeing from a US squad. Czechs 8...USA 1. Only because the Americans are in complete dissarray. :joker: Have you watched the rest of the tournament? The U.S. thumped the Swedes and were down a goal to Russia in the 3rd period of the semis. the US might take out their frustrations on the czech team though (meaning they might play very hard to win it after being frustrated by russia)

could go either way i guess...did losing to russia really take the wind out of their sails or are they going to be pissed off and fired up to beat someone up over it (again, not saying beat up as in physically, i just can't think of a better way to put it right now)

Well, some of you folks are just peachy...thrown in the towel? So far off of their game that a midget team could beat them? Not motivated to win a measly bronze medal in front of their home fans? There must be some dark humor that I just don't get. NOONE WANTS TO FINISH FOURTH OR ON A LOW NOTE. There is plenty to play for still, and with a day of rest under their belts, this ought to be a good game. The loss against Russia was obviously heartbreaking, but I think the boys were just out of gas. Playing your 4th tilt in 5 nights will do that.

Quite a nice game but some I'll have to point out something:

- awful stickhandling (or puckhandling) behind the net. Some crazy passes straight to Czech players.

Jeff Likens is the worst player on the ice for either team. His attempts to clear the puck out of his zone are pathetic and a ten year old would have better success. His outlet passes, believe it or not, are worse. He basically handed the puck to Michael Frolik on the second Czech goal and said, "here, go score, I'm terrible".

Everyone wants to kick Montoya when he's down, but he is constantly hung out to dry by this HORRIBLE HORRIBLE excuse for a defense. He has let in a few softies this tournament, but make no mistake....the defense is what has hurt the US more than anything in this WJC, not Al.

Well, in case you hadn't figured it out, the US coach Sandelin, is awful. For a coach that is supposed to be at a high level, he has really embarassed himself by showing he completely does not belong.

On a side note, Mike Brown did something to Olesz in the 2'nd and Olesz has not returned. The announcers say that it is possible that he may return, but it is questionable.

uuummm Schwarz > Olesz

Olesz leads the tournament in goals (tied). He is a vast majority of their offense. Without him on the ice the US just mauls Vrana and his other linemates whereas they couldnt if he was out their. The play of the Czechs has evaporated with his loss.

So in this game right now, it would be

SCHWARZ

But thanks for coming out.

He was hit quite hard and I think one of his shoulder is sore. I don't know the extent of the injury though.

Jake Dowell missed a wide open net. Schwarz out of position and a defender slid across the ice.....of course Dowell, the grinder and non goal scorer couldnt lift it a foot off the ice, where the rest of the net was wide open, AWFUL.

Olesz leads the tournament in goals (tied). He is a vast majority of their offense. Without him on the ice the US just mauls Vrana and his other linemates whereas they couldnt if he was out their. The play of the Czechs has evaporated with his loss.

So in this game right now, it would be

No, not at all, because if Olesz was in the 3'rd I don't think it would have went to overtime.

Schwarz looked very average to me. Sure, he made a few decent saves, nothing spectacular. He was down and out in OT and his defense bailed him out by stopping an American lug that couldn't raise the puck 12 inches.

Olesz was much more important to this team that Schwarz.

I only care about Schremp, O'Sullivan, Olesz and Frolik in this game, and Olesz was the only one that hadn't been talked about in this thread when I posted it.

But yeah, I admit it, I am definately a pretty big homer, but only in terms of liking players for my team. I don't put FLA as a better team than anyone else just cause I like them and don't get blinded by homerism in trade proposals.

Not only should it have never happened, but Likens is sticking the hell out of Vrana, who knows where the puck is going to go.

The only thing MOntoya could have done was rush out and poke the puck away...but he obviously didn't trust Likens enough to keep his man tied up. I can't blame him, I wouldn't trust Likens to be able to tie his own skates.

I agree with all of you, Likens and Montoya were pretty weak but why is it nowadays that rarely on a good move by player, that player never receive the credit he should receive. The goaltender always weak, a goaltender is never allowed to give a 5-hole goal, never ever....

We will start enjoying good offensive game whenver we will start applauding the one that score, not criticizing the ones that gave the goal.

That being said.......My god did Likens looked awful and Montoya was definately off balance but congrats to the Czech on a great move by Vrana from the Halifax Mooseheads :yo:

Just a few thoughts from me about this game and the tournament in total, inregards to team USA.

Despite scoring I wasn't really impressed with Porter. He took a couple of needless penalties.

Once again, Kessel impressed me. It seemed that with almost every US chance Kessel was involved. I'm truly looking forward to seeing him at next years WJC.

Suter really impressed me all tournament long. He's really solid back there. He would shut down many of the oppostions crafty players on the rush. The fact that the rest of the US defensive corps was weak probably made him look even better.

I really like Dan Fritche after this tournament...

As for Montoya? Yeah, he had a bad tournament. However from what I saw most of his problems can be fixed. The Rangers have Benoit Allaire as their Goalie coach. He will fix what's wrong with Montoya and the Rangers will have a good goalie in their system.

That's just my opinion...

Weirdest comment of the thread...

The Americans were very weak in goals and on D, but they at least got the decency to show up for that game. Nice effort, they just didn't have the needed ressources. Nice to see a game that isn't a complete blow-out in this tournament for a change. I feel USA's fate could have been different with Parise in and Montoya not struggling as much. He's better than what he showed. I don't think he's to blame for that loss though. The team as a whole had limited potential.

From what I have seen of Montoya he seems to have 3 problems. High glove, 5 hole and rebounds. His posistioning and reflexes are fine. The rebounds can be taught.

The bigger concerns are the holes. 5 hole and high glove. 5 hole he can like work on by adjusting his stance a bit. The glove side seems to be a speed issue. I am not goalie coach so I don't know how arm speed can be worked on.

If he can fix those issues he'll be fine. He is still only 19.

I think Montoya should be too back at U of M.

Regardless of how critical I was of him and how bad he did play, he is still a top goalie prospect and so many prospects have bad WJ and still turn out allright to say the least as others have amaizing ones and become busts. Montoya will recover in a week or 2 IMO back home and hopefully will become good again as I actually did like Montoya before. It's too bad that he had so much pressure though as it was on National television and he had pressure to equal an amaizing performance last year and the same thing happened to him as what happened to Anthony Stewart though Stewart did turn it around in the last couple games and Montoya looked good in parts of some of the games too.

i'm pretty critical of montoya...BUT...be fair. it's one bad tournament, and Fleury was awful last year...Lehtonen had a bad tournament in his second showing, as well. It seems like there's a curse on goalies at the WJC in their sophomore effort. He'll be fine.

Not surprised to hear Likens blew it on two goals. I think that statistically..if you looked back..he was on the ice for most of the goals against. Sandelin should be burned in effigy for continuing to put him on the first pairing. Even Lee looked better with Suter than Likens did. The sad thing is..this will just give more fodder to everyone talking about how overrated Suter is just because he was on the ice while goals were scored.

Yeah, like Phaneuf or even Scott Stevens could have covered Likens' sorry ass. Worst. Defenseman. Ever.

Pleasantly surprised by Borer and Hagemo. Goligoski was invisible and disappinting, Hunwick..was he even on the team? I don't know. Hopefully next year...Lee will be a year older and wiser..his size will be valuable..and Jack Johnson will take Suter's place.

And Jeff Likens will have retired from hockey to join the carpet sales business.

But that's under the erroneous assumption that EVERY shot can be stopped. Granted...Montoya let in several soft goals...but some of those rested solely on the defense's shoulders, as well. Notably the shoulders of one Jeff Likens.
