I haven't seen anything like it before. I think it's the single most badass thing I've ever seen. What's the deal with it? Is there any benefit to it, aside from intimidation?

Go to your local shop, their $60, nothing too custom about em. They cut down on glare and hide your eyes from the goalie/D.
