coaching help on some drills

hey guys, i need some help.I'm coaching a Batam house"tier3" team. My guys seem to have a real problem reading the play and anticipating were the puck is going to go. I have looked thru my practice drills and can't find any that may help them out for these 2 things. Do you have any thoughts on how to get them to read the play?

Good luck: if they are already bantams and can't read the play :dunno: ...It was spereates the good players from the VERY good players...Maybe have them watch some hockey games, study films: kind of how I learned as well as playing ALL the time...One thing that may help is playing small games, set up the nets on one end of the ice(one against each side of the boards) and play 4 on 4 or 3 on 3...Playing in a small space really helps develop skills...

Are you talking about all zones? There are different reads like forecheck reads, reading the rush reads for D. Backchecker reads for forwards. PK reads. Knowing play patterns will give you a leg up on what is coming. Perhaps at the lower levels you can encourage your players to be in certain spots and that will help counter their lack of read and react ability. You can try and simulate gamelike conditions in practice, seeing what they do naturally and then stop the play and make adjustments- repetition being the practice key.

Try simulating a game, I used this drill with my pee wee "a" team to learn positional play. Have a coach in each corner and one at the blueline, move the puck around between the coaches, getting the players to move to where they think they should be on the ice, in comparsion with the puck, then stop the play, show them the correct spot, and explain why. Works great for the defensive zone coverage. Good luck.
