Don't you hate it when you go play pickup hockey and one or both goalies don't show up and you've got to resort to flipping the goal over? Ahhh.

We just play posts...

I am a goaltender but whenever I play roady and there is only one goaltender it really takes alot of the fun out of it (when I am a shooter).

I guess it doesnt take the fun out of posts because Ive never gone to pick up and seen ONE goalie there :(

I hate that more then anything. Even the post game isnt that much fun...goalies make it so much better.

Agreed. I also HATE playing goal, mostly because I used to do it, but I'm really really bad at it. :madfire:

i used to play pickup at denver univ., and it was so popular you had to have a pass and call in advance. same for goalies though, and they only allowed 2 goalies to sign up. 2 goalies would sign up first thing in the morning for a night time session and sometimes for a couple weeks in a row you would have 10 on 10 with only one goalie because the jerk who took the spot away from everyone at 7 am didnt show up. that was reaaly annoying, since ten other guys would have loved to have come if whoever had just called and said he wasnt going to make it.

Exactly! When I show up there ready to school everyone and score some goals, I don't want to suddenly find out that I have to forget about that now and just stand there stopping shots. When I want to play goalie, I'm ready to shut everyone down, but when I'm just in the mood to skate by everybody and fire the ball by the goalie and into the net, I want to do just that. :mad: :D

Didn't you see the big disclaimers??? You cannot use real pucks with LeGoalie. If you do, it'll explode like the Hindenburg. What good is a practice goalie if it can't take a puck.

Its stupid...it randomly moves around...so when its on the right side of the net the whole left side is open....they have to take it to the next step...have a little sensor thing you put onto a puck(a REAL puck..not a junky one...so remake the goalie to withstand a regular hockey puck) so the goalie knows where the puck is and can take the angle of the shot...that way it would be much harder...but thats another 5-10 years away.

Even though you can't use rubber pucks, you can still use those plastic roller hockey pucks so it would be perfect for roller hockey.

My local rink lets all goalies player for free during pickup, yet they still rarely ever show up.

From a goalie's standpoint, the only thing worse than one goalie is too many goalies. I have been in situations where there would be four goalies suited up. So we would have to switch every 10 minutes. I hate doing that because I can't get into a good mental groove.

I think that only one goalie is worse than too many. When I'm playing against the net or the shooter tutor, I don't take it seriously. If there's another goalie in there, I at least can set up a competition against him for saves. I have a hard time staying focused when i'm the only one since I know I'm doing better than an open net.

I play pick-up on Long Island and it's always feast or famine. I had one lunch hockey at the Rinx where it was 6 skaters and 5 goalies. We made the goalies play D in full equipment.

Playing posts is the way to go in this case.

Agreed. I think shooting at the net when it's lying down is a waste of time and energy. At least with shooting at posts, you have to TRY a little. And it sure helps your accuracy.

i like pushing the net over forward and shooting into the top netting - bottom post doesnt count as in. dont like posts cuz if you dont hit it but it goes in the play stops - the other has more flow and you can work on low shots. sorry jiggs - didnt see you already mentioned that.

A fun place to play on Long Island is Ice Works, where the Isles practice. They have a half rink that makes for some fun pond hockey. Anyhoo, they have these nets that are basically just 2 columns about 6-8 inches wide going up each post, a five hole column going up 2 feet, and a bar along the ice. It's not a goalie but it's more fun than the shooter tutors. If you miss one of the areas, where there would be a goalie, the shot goes straight to the boards.

Does anybody know the correct name for these things? Or even what I'm talking about?

After playing pickup yesterday, I came to a conclusion on things I hate during pickup and wanted to rant about.

I absolutely hate it when guys won't shoot on me because I'm a chick or because they think I'm not good enough for them to shoot on so they'll pass around until they give me a lame ass dribbler-- which more than likely goes in since I suck at stopping those because I think too much. I realize every time I put on the pads that pucks will fly at me and may miss a piece of padding, but that's a chance I willingly take. No one is forcing me to stand in the net during pickup. I'm not going to leave the rink in tears because a guy hit me with a puck. I won't break in half, either. It's insulting and it pisses me off. Even if I can't stop the shots, at least don't insult me by not taking one. I'd rather it went in and made me work at stopping it instead of dribbling between my legs.

We hang three water bottles inside the nets and play post and bottles. It makes it a little more fun than just post and gives you something inside the net to shoot at.

This was a big problem for the Islanders during the 90s.

It's the unspoken rule here to play "take-back" with only one goalie.

People struggle with it at first but once you get used to it, it's not bad.

Couldn't play this week because no goalies showed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 :cry:

I wonder if any other goalies do what I do when they can't make pickup games-- I give my equipment to someone else so there can be a goalie.

You guys are ALL crazy. I think goalie is without a doubt the most fun position to play. Posts is boring. Goalie is fun. I love playing goalie. You can do so much. You can play your style, reflex, make something new up, etc. Just watch a bunch of hockey and have fun trying to mimic those guys, thats what i do when i'm bored.

I dunno, i play for money so i have the drive to make saves and such. If we only have two people outside of me we either do one on one's or 2 forwards trying to score on me. Or just me and another person they just try to score. IF i make 10 straight saves i get a buck, if they score 5 straight goals they get a buck. Rather fun, especially since i'm up 12 bucks so far this year.

I wish people would do that, I wouldn't mind playing goal every once in a while. Shinny often gives the goalie quite a few shots to deal with, and is quite exciting.


BUT I HATE WITH THE TURN THE NET BACKWARDS, dont they understand that the hockey puck is not meant to bounce.
