Help needed. What exactly does it mean if you are told you are "on the QMJHL scouting list". Is this a preliminary draft list? Do you have to opt in, or something like that, to actually be drafted? Should you contact the team that put you on the list?

If team(s) are interested in a player, they'll let him know. Being on a draft list means only that this player is a player to watch. Only players on the draft list can be drafted. Most likely Central Scouting put this player on the list and not a team.
There will be 120-150 US players on the draft list and only 15-25 will be drafted.
Being drafted only means that if a player decided to play in the CHL, the team that drafted him has his rights.

Players don't need to opt in. A player can be drafted by a CHL team without losing any NCAA eligibility. Most teams will not draft a US player unless they feel
he wants to play in the league, otherwise it would be a wasted draft pick.

16 year old players must be taken in the first five rounds and 17 years olds can be taken at any time in the draft.

Teams may take a chance late in the draft at a top US player who hasn't shown interest. Just in case he changes his mind in the future.
