2005 Draft Question?...

Does anyone have any idea how the NHL plans to organize the 2005 draft? Because, I get the feeling that there won’t be any hockey this season.

Is it fair to slot the draft in the 2004 order? I don’t think so. Who’s to say that Chicago or Pittsburgh won’t be much better or a team like Boston won’t be much worse with the players they lost. As for our Devils, we can possibly start the 2005 season less 3 top defensemen: Stevens (Retirement - maybe) Rafalski (Free agency – maybe) Niedermayer (Free agency – likely). I’m not saying it’s fair if Tampa Bay was to get the first pick, which would be Crosby, but you get my point. :dunno:

Interesting question, but I'm sure the league has prepared for it though they prob. will not reveal the plan. I'd like to see two Lotteries: One for nonplayoff [1-14],followed by One playoff[15-30]. Why should Washington get a shot at Crosby after just lucking out with Ovechkin? They would, going by '04 order.
Or you could have a nonweighted Lot, and all 30 just select what number the ping pong ball they get. NJ, Det.,Col have just as good a shot as Pitt.,DC,CBH.
If you wanted to be perfectly fair, I suppose a reverse order of winning percentage [ av.over the last 3 seasons] would probably give the most deserving[or the most incompetent] access to the best talent in 05 draft.

The way I understand it is if there is no season that all teams will get ONE ping pong ball or whatever they use. That means our chances of landing Crosby will be the same as everyone elses.

Watch Philly, Detriot or the Av's get him if this is the way it goes.

That makes perfect sence, but it's not reallyfair. Does Detroit deserve Crosby, the Rag$? My way all the lousy records would have a equal % shot[not a weighted lot] at Crosby, and all the playoff teams would be equal: ie the Cup winner could select the 15th ping pong ball, in theory.

To take the reverse of that, Montreal, Nashville, San Jose and Calgary, who lost in the Finals, made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2003-04 after not qualifying the previous season.

Had the lockout been a year earlier, those four 2004 playoff-teams above would have had better chances at Crosby than the four 2003-playoff teams from above. That would not have been fair. There's no way of reasonably predicting who the 16 playoff teams would be if the season is not played. A league-wide lottery is the only fair solution.

In fact, I think they should have a lottery for each round. The first round, of course, would be the biggest prize, especially with a talent like Sidney Crosby heading most people's list. But it would be better than one drawing to decide the order for all rounds.

As a Devils fan, I dream of having a line of Parise-Crosby-Suglobov to go with the EGG line, the Madden line and a 4th line of grinders.

If the NHL does salvage a season, look for the Rangers to start a contest in which three fans are selected from the crowd to play goal for a period. It would help their attendance and help the team secure the worst record in hockey. Actually, it might be an improvement over the goalies they have been using on the shady side of the Hudson.

Inside Dish: NHL has contingency draft plan

The NHL has a contingency draft plan in case the season is lost. It isn't set yet, but the basics are in place. The draft is scheduled for June, but there won't be a draft until there is a new collective bargaining agreement, NHL executive vice president Bill Daly says. After a deal is in place, the league is expected to determine the draft order with a weighted lottery involving all 30 teams--last season's worst teams would have a greater chance of picking first. Having a contingency plan does not mean the league is planning to kill the season. It's just an appropriate precaution. . . .
