Question for all Winnipeggers: AHL or WHL

It seems that most people I ask would rather see a WHL Junior team play rather than the AHL Moose. The exception may be 2004-05, since the quality of play will be better, and there is no danger that the best players on the team will be recalled to the NHL Canucks.

I would just like to know which league you like better and why. Also would you support a WHL team in Winnipeg? keep in mind the Wheat Kings played to crowds of 7500 at the arena the last time they were here (about the same as the Moose average per year).

Your input would be greatly appreciated! :)

I'm not a Winnipegger, but I'd think people would prefer the WHL. There are no true rivals in the AHL for Manitoba fans. Getting Edmonton should finally create one, but it has to be grown over time. I'm sure if the WHL came in, Brandon would become an instant rival, as would Regina (the Roughies/Bombers one spilling over). P.A. and Saskatoon could grow with time.

Fans go to games as much to see the other team as their home team play. The AHL doesn't offer much to them in that regard.

I am in Winnipeg, and I have Moose Season tickets. But, I agree. The Moose have no real rivals like the Whl teams do. The AHL is spread all over the maps. There are teams that we never even see. I follow the Whl LOTS!! In some areas you can see alot of the away games within 3 hours. The closest team to the Moose are Toronto or Edmonton which are 14+hours away. The teams also move or change names too much, ex CFL. The new MTS Centre is going to be nice. 133m 15,015 for hockey, everything state-of the-art. Opens November 17/04. The Ahl is way better this year, look at the players in the league. Jay (World Cup) Misster. Nathan Horton, Staal, Tootoo, Upshall, Laich, Spezza and lots of others. I hope the NHL is out all year. Ooops, sorry Calgary.

I just heard some great news today! Due to the annual Keystone Fair in Brandon, the Wheat Kings are going to play 2 or 3 games here in March. I can't wait until tickets go on sale! I'm kinda suprised that the True North people would allow this, since they have stated on record that they are dead-set against any WHL team playing at the MTS Centre. Maybe having 15,000 screaming fans, without those annoying distractions at Moose games will open their eyes!

I have always preferred WHL to AHL. Part of the reason is I hate the Casucks, and therefore cannot cheer for my hometown team. Now that this year the stupid AHL schedule doesn't even have the Moose play Lowell (the Flames team), the only chance I'll have to go to the new arena is for the WJC exhibition games.

Casucks, how original.

On to the topic now. I think any hockey fan that has seen both leagues would say WHL in a heart-beat. The kids work their ***** off every night with tons of passion. The AHL isn't the same.

I wouldn't mind seeing a WHL team in Winnipeg..the question is who?? Which WHL franchise would move?? I do know the WHL isnt even entertained to expansion plans at all.....maybe something would happen to see that? :dunno:

No expansion. It will have to be through relocation. There is no doubt about which WHL team should move here (IMO)- The MOOSE JAW WARRIORS! They moved from Winnipeg in 1984, mainly because the Jets were the big game in town, and the Warriors were second fiddle.

If we were to bring the Warriors back to Winnipeg, the AHL Moose would suffer, since even the Brandon Wheat Kings have better attendance than the Moose when they play here 3 or 4 times per year. The Winnipeg Warriors would be the top dog in Winnipeg's hockey scene, with the Moose coming in a distant second.

WHL by a huge margin.

I'd be a season ticket holder. I haven't seen a regular season Moose game for three years.

Hey Pockey, I agree but you are still missing out of some good hockey in the Moose.

The Moose Jaw Warriors?? oh yeah that could be a good choice to move a franchise from there to the orginial location..but is there any proof the MJ Warriors are in trouble or what?

Second to worst attendance and worst team in the league.

So was Sask last year and they turned it around this season. Don't be so quick to move a team based on a half year performance.

It would be better if the AHL Moose left for Victoria,BC. Victoria would be an ideal city for a Vancouver farm team, not to mention the new arena that will be complete before 2005-06. If the Moose left the Peg, nobody would cry for them. They are the shame of Manitoba.

I would like to see a Winnipeg based W.H.L. Why, because it would creat an instant rivaly between Brandon. Players are not playing for money, it is more exiting to watch than N.H.L. I used to got to just about every Winnipeg Warriors game during the late 70,s to early 80's. Winnipeg Club games and the Winnipeg Monarchs during the 70's. Those were good games. Even the junior leagues around Winnipeg are pretty good(AAA, AA, & MMJHL). This is my opinion on this post.
