Non-Roster Invites:
goaltenders Mathieu Chouinard and Tyler MacKay
defensemen Bryan Nathe and Tim Wedderburn
left wings Max Birbraer and Lanny Gare
centers Scott Cameron, Evan Cheverie, Jamie Johnson, Brent Kelly and Olivier Proulx
right wings Guillaume Fournier, Sean O’Connor and Jason Ralph
Bobby Ryan Getzlaf 09-25-2004, 02:21 PM Matheiu Chouinard? He's definetely better than Ferhi, so he'll probably be signed unless he blows up in camp or something. And yet another former King would join the Ducks.
McDonald19 09-25-2004, 02:59 PM http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=105642
Heres what the Kings board had to say about Mathieu Chouinard.
Kevin Forbes 09-25-2004, 05:13 PM Mathieu Chouinard - former Ottawa prospect (twice drafted just like Tim Brent = 15th overall in 1998, 45th overall in 2000). Spent last season in the Kings organization. Was once touted to be the next great Quebec goaltender, now 24, he's an average AHL goaltender. He has some size and is quick, plays a standup style and has a good glove. His problem is work ethic and rebound control. He's had trouble with his weight. He's an improvement over Ferhi and if he is signed, he'll probably be Bryz's backup until the NHL season starts and then he will be Cincy's starter.
Tyler Mackay - Former WHL star, was a top netminder in the ECHL last season with Wheeling. He's already been signed to an ECHL contract with San Diego (Anaheim's affiliate in the ECHL). He's probably there just to provide competition. If someone gets injured or on a cold streak he can fill in at the AHL level (like Trevor Koening last season). Never drafted, he'll likely be San Diego's starting goalie, depending on whether Chouinard is retained and where Ferhi goes.
Bryan Nathe - Just finished his overager year in the WHL, he also played 2 seasons in the NCAA. Was a captain with WHL expansion team, Everett, he has signed a pro contract with the Dayton City Bombers of the ECHL. Seems to be primarily a defensive player based on his stats, he was a key and solid player for Northwestern University before leaving after his sophomore year. It's thought that that jump from NCAA to WHL probably ruined his chances in the NHL. Will probably play in the ECHL this year.
Tim Wedderburn - Former Prince George standout, he spent last season with the Utah Grizzlies in the AHL and the previous year with Hershey. A two-way puck-moving blueliner in the WHL, he's still developing his offensive game at the AHL level. We might not have room for him. Has signed a deal for the 2004-05 season with the UHL's Rockford Ice Hogs.
Max Birbraer - Drafted 67th overall in 2000 by the New Jersey Devils, the Kazakhstan native spent 3 seasons with Albany before signing last season with Florida and splitting the year between the AHL (San Antonio) and the CHL (Laredo). He was a top player in Junior A the year he was drafted (50 goals and 82 points in 47 games) but hasn't been able to stay healthy enough to show that skill at the AHL level yet. An interesting story, him and his family fled from Kazakhstan because of religious persecution, and made their way to Israel. He played for the Israeli national team at a few tournaments and was convinced to come to Canada. He then served some time in an Israeli jail for not serving in the military before making it to Canada. Could be the NHL's first Israeli if he can stay healthy and make an impression with a team.
Lenny Gare - Another player who already has a deal with the Dayton City Bombers of the ECHL. He played last year with the Quad-City Mallards of the UHL and he played well enough to get a callup to Hershey in the AHL. Was a top offensive and defensive player for the University of New Hampshire, he was named to various all-star teams and received a number of awards during his college career.
Scott Cameron - Selected by New Jersey in 1999, 185th overall. He had strong seasons with North Bay in the OHL, spent two years with Albany before spending last year between 2 AHL teams (Albany and Syracuse) and 2 ECHL teams (Cincinnati and Dayton). He's a fairly small (180 pounds) sharpshooter, but plays tough. He just recently signed a contract for the upcoming season with Dayton City in the ECHL.
Evan Cheverie - University of Miami grad, he spent last season between the AHL, ECHL and UHL. Recently signed a contract with Long Beach Ice Dogs. Cheverie is from Dartmouth, NS which is close to where I live... He was most sucessful at the ECHL and is looking to move up.
Jamie Johnson - Played last season with the Ice Gators of the ECHL, before that he was a pivot for Oshawa in the OHL. Topped 100 points in his 2002-03 season. He has the talent to succeed in the AHL, but is small in stature.
Brent Kelly - Attended Anaheim's rookie tournament. He has signed a deal to return to Johnstown of the ECHL for next season. He was a top offensive player in the OHL and also is a top player in the ECHL. Looking to make the jump to the AHL.
Olivier Proulx - Signed a deal with the Rockford IceHogs of the UHL. Only 5-9, he was an offensive whiz in the OHL and had a strong year last year with Dayton City in the ECHL. Like all small players, he has a fiery attitude needed in order to survive in competitive hockey.
Guillaume Fournier - Just finished a strong career in the QMJHL. He helped lead Gatineau to the Memorial Cup tournament last year and now is looking to jump to pro hockey. Just 5-8 tall, he's already signed a deal with San Diego for the upcoming year.
Sean O’Connor - Former Florida Panthers prospect (drafted 82nd overall in 2000). He plays a tough gritty game (as can be seen by his 3 seasons topping 100 PIM in the WHL). May not be AHL talent, but has already signed a deal with San Diego for the upcoming year.
Jason Ralph - Grad of Union College, spent the last 3 years with Bakersfield (formerly WCHL now ECHL). Has a deal in place with the Rockford IceHogs for the upcoming year. Plays a tough gritty game and has shown some offensive flair as well.
McDonald19 09-25-2004, 07:57 PM nice work Forbesy...
I think they should sign Chouinard and play Ferhi with San Diego.
McDonald19 09-28-2004, 01:35 AM Training Camp Roster is up now at...
http://www.cincinnatimightyducks.com/
McDonald19 09-28-2004, 01:37 AM Kurtis Foster is on the training camp roster after previously being listed as an OSHL player.
McDonald19 09-28-2004, 01:39 AM Andrew Canzanello (D) Ian Forbes (D) and Frederic Cassivi (G) are on the regular roster rather than invitees part?
They have contracts with Cincy?
Fan.At 09-28-2004, 07:01 AM Max Birbraer - Drafted 67th overall in 2000 by the New Jersey Devils, the Kazakhstan native spent 3 seasons with Albany before signing last season with Florida and splitting the year between the AHL (San Antonio) and the CHL (Laredo). Really interesting. Could be a pickup with high upside. I like New Jerseys draft-style - they have a knack on digging out talent where you would never expect it.

I know Andy is under contract with Cincy, not sure who else.
Chistov23 09-28-2004, 05:03 PM Training Camp Roster is up now at...
http://www.cincinnatimightyducks.com/
Looking at the roster I think there will be some good battles going on to try and get more ice time. Glencross who was so great in the rookie tournament could easily find himself on the 3rd line behind chistov and kunitz on the left wing. Here are my lines going by the position they listed each player as:
Chistov Smirnov Lupul
Kunitz Perrault Holmqvist
Glencross Brent Parenteau
Penner Konopka Stepp
Davis and Pohanka go to San Diego while Pecker is the 13th forward
Popovic Malec
O'Brien Foster
Rome Alen/Brookbank
Canzanello in San Diego but maybe getting some time also.
McDonald19 09-28-2004, 07:02 PM Davis and Pohanka go to San Diego
I think this is likely as well...at least there will be a couple players to keep an eye on when us Californians without hockey go to Gulls and Icedogs games to ease the tension...
lux_interior 09-28-2004, 11:03 PM Has signed a deal for the 2004-05 season with the UHL's Rockford Ice Hogs.
I know a few guys who would fit perfectly on a team named the Ice Hogs, as well as their affiliated teams, the Puck Hogs and the Glory Hogs. (I can say that as a reformed Ice Hog).
Hockeyfan02 09-29-2004, 01:18 AM I think this is likely as well...at least there will be a couple players to keep an eye on when us Californians without hockey go to Gulls and Icedogs games to ease the tension...
At least you can go to some hockey games. Here in Tampa its Lightning or bust for me. I'd much rather have this thread be Ducks training camp not Cinncy. These ******** need to get this thing settled.
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-29-2004, 01:57 AM Hey, at least you'll be the defending champs forever.
Pepper 09-29-2004, 02:59 PM I think Davis might stick around in Cincy, they lack true heavyweights and you need atleast one in AHL.
Matheiu Chouinard? He's definetely better than Ferhi, so he'll probably be signed unless he blows up in camp or something. And yet another former King would join the Ducks.
From the Gulls web site...
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls and goaltender Mathieu Chouinard have agreed to terms for the 2004-05 season, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Tuesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
McDonald19 09-29-2004, 08:01 PM The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks have signed goaltender Frederic Cassivi and defensemen Andrew Canzanello, Ian Forbes and Kurtis Foster to American Hockey League contracts for the 2004-05 season.
http://www.cincinnatimightyducks.com/
McDonald19 09-29-2004, 08:02 PM so is Cassivi better than Ferhi?
one of them is going to San Diego...
I see he is 29 so I'm guessing he will be Bryz's veteran backup and Ferhi goes to San Diego...
Kevin Forbes 09-29-2004, 09:24 PM we have Bryzgalov, Ferhi, MacKay, Chouinard and Cassivi for 4 goalie spots....
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-29-2004, 11:36 PM They never get injured or anything.
McDonald19 09-30-2004, 12:10 AM we have Bryzgalov, Ferhi, MacKay, Chouinard and Cassivi for 4 goalie spots....
It's going to be interesting...
Kevin Forbes 09-30-2004, 12:39 AM They never get injured or anything.
somehow I don't think the strategy for between the pipes is "pray for an injury so all the guys get a chance to play"
Fan.At 09-30-2004, 04:24 AM It's not like any of these guys (besides Bryzgalov) are legit NHL prospects. Doesn't matter if they play or sit.
If the money is there to pay them, sign them, but I would not expect more than an injury call-up.
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-30-2004, 08:44 AM somehow I don't think the strategy for between the pipes is "pray for an injury so all the guys get a chance to play"
You're right. It's more like "in case of an injury we won't have to sign someone on the spot." Like Fan.At said, none but Bryz are still developing.
we have Bryzgalov, Ferhi, MacKay, Chouinard and Cassivi for 4 goalie spots....
MacKay and Chouinard don't count since they are the Gulls tandem. Ferhi can be cut loose or loaned out to another ECHL team with out problem after his crappy season last year. I really don't see ANY competition for the 2 Cincy spots.
Max Birbraer - Drafted 67th overall in 2000 by the New Jersey Devils, the Kazakhstan native spent 3 seasons with Albany before signing last season with Florida and splitting the year between the AHL (San Antonio) and the CHL (Laredo).
Birbraer has signed with the Gulls.

MIGHTY DUCKS REDUCE TRAINING CAMP ROSTER TO 28
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks assigned defensemen Chris Canzanello and Ian Forbes to San Diego of the ECHL and released left wings Max Birbraer and Lanny Gare, centers Scott Cameron, Jamie Johnson, Brent Kelly and Olivier Proulx, right wings Guillaume Fournier and Jason Ralph, defensemen Chris Bogas and Bryan Nathe and goaltenders Mathieu Chouinard and Tyler MacKay.
The Mighty Ducks’ training camp roster now stands at 28 players, including three goaltenders, eight defensemen and 17 forwards.
McDonald19 10-06-2004, 06:40 PM Now that leaves Ferhi and Cassivi to fight for the backup goalie spot.
McDonald19 10-06-2004, 06:43 PM Cincy has a preseason game tomorrow at Cleveland...
mrichard 10-06-2004, 07:49 PM That's clear that Bryz and Cassivi gone be in the net this year
in Cincy.and for the others cuts-no surprises.
macdonald 19-what do you think-you sounds very well inform-reply

well I think Ferhi will be sent to San Diego ECHL although they will have to then deal with the 3 goalie problem down there.
Four other Cuts would have to be made I think, but I'm not 100% sure of 23 as the roster count for AHL.
Heres my guess:
O'Connor and Cheverie cut.
Pohanka and Davis sent to San Diego.
Wedderburn would be kept as the 8th defensmen. If he is cut and they go with 7 defensmen then Pohanka could stay with Cincy.

New Article: Cincinnati Mighty Ducks Season Preview
McDonald19 10-12-2004, 06:06 AM Here's the Cincy Mighty Ducks site's season preview:
http://www.cincinnatimightyducks.com/news/stories/ducks-cov/notes/notes-preview-10.11.04.htm
"Eddy Ferhi, who appeared in 19 games with Cincinnati last season, will begin his second professional season on the club’s injured list recovering from off-season knee surgery"
I guess CFB was right...injuries would solve the problem of the team having 3 goalies...
McDonald19 10-12-2004, 06:26 AM can't find anything official yet but it appears Evan Cheverie was released from his tryout and George Davis was assigned to San Diego, as neither appear on any roster for Cincy. O'Connor and Wedderburn are still listed.
I guess it seems that they sent him straight down to the Kansas City Outlaws of the UHL. He is listed on their 22 man roster. Are they even affiliated with the Ducks organization at all?
F George Davis 07/28/83 6'2'' 235 lbs. Nova Scotia, N Sidney Cincinnati Mighty Ducks AHL
http://www.kansascityoutlaws.com/team/news/?id=768
Kevin Forbes 10-12-2004, 08:27 AM at levels like the UHL, there aren't usually direct affiliations, but they can loan players to that level.
Interesting enough, former Ducks prospect Francois Caron is on the Kansas City Outlaws roster as well.
I thought Cincy had Davis plugged in for spot duty on the 4th line to drop the gloves when needed. Does anyone know why they wouldn't at least send him down to the ECHL instead?

He's not that good seems to be the easy answer. Wouldn't surprise me to see Davis take a similar path as Burnett... bouncing around 5 minor leagues for 5-10 years.

If he's not good enough even for the ECHL he's a wasted pick then.

I think it was pretty telling last season when he attended the Gulls camp and basically got cut, forcing a return to Juniors.
Kevin Forbes 10-12-2004, 05:09 PM I think it was pretty telling last season when he attended the Gulls camp and basically got cut, forcing a return to Juniors.
not exactly
Halifax wanted him back quite badly
They had a young team and they wanted his veteran leadership
The Mooseheads then negoitated with San Diego and Anaheim to get him back in Halifax. Davis benefited a bit from it (he got 2nd line minutes approximently in the Q compared to an expected 4th line minutes in the ECHL).
McDonald19 10-12-2004, 07:09 PM Thats interesting that Davis would fall all the way to the UHL.
I guess Cincy is comfortable with their team toughness provided by O'Brien, Konopka, Brookbank, Rome, OConnor, etc.
Congrats to Wedderburn and OConnor for making the team on tryouts.
I'm guessing maybe the Ducks aren't pleased with his play obviously though. Is he even considered a prospect anymore or like someone said he'll have to work his way up to the big leagues after 5+ Minor League season.
