petec1978* 09-10-2003, 10:06 PM Superleague started yesterday weeeeeeeeeeee! The Superleague is in the process of retooling their site so I don't have all the scores up and running right this instant. SM-Liiga starts Saturday. War Karri Akkanen getting 200 PIMs in Finland's highest league.
Here are the Lightning's European prospects with their current teams (if known):
Czech Republic
Marek Posmyk, HC Plzen(CZE-XL)
Ivan Rachunek, ??? (Was Zlin, CZE-XL)
Finland
Karri Akkanen, Ilves Tampere(FIN-SML)
Raimonds Dainilics, Assat JrA (FIN-JRA)
Erikki Rajamaki, Ilves Tampere(FIN-SML)
Germany
Sascha Goc, Adler Mannheim(GER-DEL)

Albert Vishnyakov, Ak-Bars Kazan (RUS-SL)
Ilja Solarev, ??? (No Full Gig Last Season)
Vitali Smolianinov, ??? (Was Vorenzh, RUS-UL)
In Smolianinov's case, probably still is Vorenzh, just need to confirm it, and probably spelling it correctly would be cool too
Sweden
Johan Hagglund, Hammarby(SWE-ALS)
Frederik Norrena, Linkoping(SWE-ELT)
A lot of Russians. Not a lot of Finns. Definitely not enough Swedes. Still too many Czechs :D
I'll be throwing the super secret HF links page for Europe together in the next few days (on a new server!)... then once camp gets parsed out add in the North Americans and then the reporting fun can begin. I reiterate: weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

-Pete Choquette
You call, 2 Czechs too many? Granted the 2 we have aren't the best, still against them for the teams they play for and where they were born? Some of the best players in the world come from that little country. :handclap:
I wonder where this team would be if not for a certain Czech from last season Vaclav Prospal? My guess, is we would of been sitting out of the playoffs yet again. So a Czech helped take us to the playoffs, and I'm not about to trash a Czech when they helped take us that far!
Too many Russians, thanks to the Dudley era.
I just don't understand how you can write an unbiased report on prospects when you have an overwhelmingly unhealthy bias against Czech players? I thought being a good reporter meant walking in neutral and letting results bring you the writing. :teach:
exterminator-x 09-11-2003, 04:44 AM Chill out, Apollo. It's kinda an inside joke with Pete and posters who are familiar with Pete's writing. Hence, the reason Pete added the big grin emoticon after the comment.
Pete's not a Czech bigot... just vocal about some of the personalities of certain Czech players, which you have to admit seems to standout in world of hockey. :)
Oceanic39* 09-11-2003, 06:09 AM He may also end up in a league like the USHL, EJHL, or NAHL thereby throwing him, and the challenge of spelling his name, into Chad's column. Wishful thinking.
Thanks to Jay "I love North Americans" Feaster, Chad's workload keeps getting bigger.
I'm still working on Hrdel's name, I don't have time for the Latvian's just yet.
petec1978* 09-11-2003, 08:46 AM Wrong. SM-Liiga starts Friday.
You are correct sir. It starts 9/12. When posting at 4:06am, what day 9/12 is tends to be difficult to point out.
I forgot Norrena on the list.
Chill out, Apollo. It's kinda an inside joke with Pete and posters who are familiar with Pete's writing. Hence, the reason Pete added the big grin emoticon after the comment.
Yes. Truth is I'd draft a blind one legged chimpanzee if I thought he could help my team win a Stanley Cup, even regardless of if it was a Czech blind one legged chimpanzee :)

Actually Fredrik Norrena is playing in Linköping (SWE-ELT) nowadays.

Spreadsheet fun begins tomorrow I guess.
-Pete Choquette
petec1978* 09-11-2003, 08:51 PM Raimonds Danilics will be playing junior for Assat in Finland according to one of the good folks on the Finland board. Their first game is 9/13.
-Pete Choquette
petec1978* 09-12-2003, 06:53 AM Pavel Sedov and Alexei Glukhov were farmed by Khimik to start the season. Sedov isn't even listed on their basic roster for the season, although he's still on their home page.
-Pete Choquette
petec1978* 09-12-2003, 07:19 AM Karri Akkanen will probably be splitting time between Ilves Jr. A and Ilves SM-Liiga team again this season. He isn't listed on their big roster on the SM-Liiga website to start the year but is on their Jr. A roster. Ilves Jr. A team starts tomorrow. Ilves is losing their opener 2-1 at the end of 2 periods... Rajamaki with 2PIMs so far.
Dainilics to Assat Jr. A confirmed.

Are they ever going to get him in or what? Thought he went over there to play? He might as well sit in our press-box. At least then he'd be getting some practice with Reeser.

This is the 2nd game from what I can see! Give it time.
Oceanic39* 09-13-2003, 03:36 PM It's not Euro, but the Q season has started.
Rimouski won two nights ago 4-3. Crosby with the hatter, Hrdel with 0+0, 3 shots.
O'Brien and Boutin in TB while their teams played each other in the Q opener Thur.

Two questions:
1. How many games in a season for this league?
and (totally unrelated)
2. Do you want this thread stickied?
Kronblom 09-14-2003, 04:51 AM Swedish hockey starts 9/17 for Hammarby and I don't see a schedule on Linkoping's site (which is very scaled back this season).
They had some trouble with their site the past week, so you probably saw a temporary site.
http://www.linkopinghc.se/lhc/elit/games/games1.php
petec1978* 09-14-2003, 08:07 AM So Linkoping starts 9/24? Sounds about right. Hopefully swehockey.se relaunches their online section soon.
There are 50 regular season games in a season for a Superleague team. I'd expect Cherepovets to make the playoffs so there will be a few more. 15-20 games may be generous for Evgeny. Their starter Viktor Chistov has been around their organization a long time and they trust him and they also have Jamie Ram on their roster who was a Ranger$ prospect once upon a time and has started in the AHL, SM-Liiga, and Elitserian.
Sticky it if you want to.
-Pete Choquette
Erack82 09-14-2003, 09:15 AM 15-20 games may be generous for Evgeny.
For that, they might as well assign him to an Upper League team.

He's on their expanded roster but didn't make their opening night group so they basically farmed him to start the year. He'll be one of their first call ups.
And apparently even the Lightning don't know what is going on with Rachunek.

Koshechkin takes the loss.
Good to see all them getting Super League time. I'm very surprised Sedov is playing up there, and to a lesser extent Glukhov.
petec1978* 09-15-2003, 05:13 PM In all honesty, they're probably not playing in these games at all, but they don't even report starting goaltenders half the time and never post starting lineups on the Superleague site. When Max relaunches RHI.com it will help greatly.
In all likelihood, seeing as Sedov wasn't listed on the opening day Superleague roster on Khimik's site (yes I know he's on the homepage, but click the opening day roster press release) and Glukhov is only listed as a player elligible for callup from the farm it is likely they began the season in the Upper League for whatever team is Khimik's farm team. I don't have that information yet as Upper league rosters haven't been released on the Superleague site which is why I haven't been able to confirm where Smolianinov and Solarev are yet, although the former likely plays for HC Voronezh and the latter probably plays for Molot Perm now that they've been relegated to the Upper League.
So, best guess is you won't see Sedov in the Superleague for more than a cup of coffee, and that Glukhov will probably play like half the year there. They added some guys like Tenkrat to their roster to try and make them competitive in the Superleague which has pushed Glukhov down the roster a bit.
We got an e-mail saying Sedov is playing in the Superleague, but I have reason to doubt the correctness of that information because the same e-mail said Rachunek is still playing with Zlin and at this stage he isn't... and Chad can vouch for that because I linked him to the info.
I'm trying to track down this information with Max and Eugene on the message boards. It may take time to get answers, but at this stage doing it through HF has been quicker (Dainilics) and more accurate (Rachunek) than doing it through the team's official channels.

Big page update coming soon. And I mean BIG. 18 of 19 players covered. Thank God they signed Somervuori and Holmqvist and Bergfors went to Wichita.
Tomorrow is a big slate: all the Czechos, Dainilics and Rajamaki, all the Russians sans Konstantinov (not that he'll ever get to play anyway), and a Swedish cameo by the movie star good looks of Fredrik Norrena (the pick that used to be Joe Boumedienne).

Three prospects that I am excited for this season already Polushin, Kazionov, and yes Koshechkin. I'm hoping Koshechkin can go up the top 10 after this season, because at this rate Konstantinov will be dead last.
petec1978* 10-02-2003, 08:06 AM Alex Polushin had 1G 1A today against the second worst team in the Superleague. He now has 4-1-5 in 10 games. He only had 5 goals and 11 points all of last season. At this pace, if he plays as many games as last season, he'll have around 24 points.
Put that in perspective, But had 29 last season and 24 the year before and became a fixture on the EuroTour teams and was an All-Star both seasons.

Oceanic39* 10-13-2003, 05:21 AM I swear, among a lot of our Euros, Coleman, Boutin, Pearce, Perrin, Holmqvist, Dicaire, and Artukhin, there's WAY too many "DNP" listings on these pages.
exterminator-x 10-13-2003, 07:27 AM I swear, among a lot of our Euros, Coleman, Boutin, Pearce, Perrin, Holmqvist, Dicaire, and Artukhin, there's WAY too many "DNP" listings on these pages.
Hershey is carrying seven or eight AHL vets, of which Perrin, Willis, and Trepanier all qualify. AHL rules state that Hershey can only ice six AHL vets per game. I imagine Willis and Trepanier will be mainstays on the lineup, along with a few others. I look for Perrin to get scratched every third game or so, unless he plays himself into a position where Fixter can't take him out of the lineup. While Perrin had a solid camp in Tampa, his camp performance in Hershey was largely nondescript. To Fixter right now, he hasn't stood out from the crowd yet. Perrin has some work to do.
With Dicaire, he has some stout competition for playing time in Utah. He basically showed up in Salt Lake pretty much out of the blue, and after camp was basically over. They don't know him from jack out there. He had strong camps in Tampa and Hershey, but he's got to prove it all over again with a new staff. The affiliation junk has definitely crapped all over Gerard. With blueline puck-movers like Berenzweig and Trevor Daly in the forefront, he's going to have to turn some heads to get consistent time. Good news is that he's done that before, and that he wasn't a scratch in the second game. First non-minor injury on the Tampa blueline, I predict Dicaire will be yanked out of Utah and called up to the Bolts unless he can establish himself as a regular starter. You guys would be surprised to find out how close Dicaire played himself onto the Bolt roster.
Arthukhin is penciled in for fourth line duty on a very forward-deep Hershey team. Look for him to be scratched often unless they need to ice an "enforcer" against an especially physical team. Sucks for R2. He needs to be Pensacola badly.
Holmqvist will get the odd scratch here and there until he settles in and consistently hits the scoresheet. Hamilton is VERY deep on the blueline. Sounds like he played a safe and solid defensive game for the Hamilton opener, which is understandable, but it is his offense that is going to set him apart.
Svitov and Aleexev are going to have to produce for their respective clubs or they WILL find out what the hot dogs taste like. Hamilton and Hershey are just too deep.
petec1978* 10-13-2003, 08:11 AM In the cases of Glukhov, Sedov, and Vishnyakov... a DNP in the Superleague means they're probably playing in the Farm League, which I have yet to get access to in terms of stats.
Some of these European guys, and you can probably guess which ones, have injury problems.
My only worries about playing time involve Koshechkin and Akkanen at this stage.

STL must have seen something they liked.
petec1978* 10-27-2003, 02:53 PM He's been playing well lately. I believe he's been at around .75PPG in the last 10-12 games since his slow start in the SM-liiga. If the Blues scouts caught him in one of the multi-point outings he had I guess they could've gotten excited about him. Seems to me the Lightning pretty much threw in the towel on him after he quit Colgate. He's got decent size and he's more physical than the average Euro but I still can't see him as more than a lower line player.
Considering we've gotten guys like Soucy, Reid, and Craig in the 8th round, I'll take the pick we got happily. Our scouts have a way of finding gems, although this last year I didn't like much of our day two pickings.

Gerald Coleman looks promising (7th Round).
I'm still hoping fellow WHLer Nick Tarnasky can pan out much like Darren Reid, but we have to wait a few years on him.

Well of course everyone has a ton of work to do before getting to the NHL level. O'Brien was a nice pickup too, forgot about him. Greco from what I hear isn't all that special. ilvins 10-31-2003, 12:41 AM Pete, I read your comments in Lightning european report on Danilics lack of production so far in Finnish Jr.league. You state that Danilics could not crack Assat lineup so he moved to Lukko. I doubt this is the case as Lukko is in second place at the moment and Assat is 14th in the finnish junior league, so Lukko has much stronger team. I think his point production will pick up as the season progresses, and as he gets used to foreign country, language and much stronger competition than in Latvia. BTW he and fellow latvian Lauris Darzins from the Lukko Jr.team will be invited to Latvian men's team for participation in EuroChallenge second round tournament, taking place in Denmark, 7-9 of November.

I haven't gone through all of them yet but my initial reaction is that the '04 Draft is going to be a return to Europe for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Too many big athletic Russian players on this list for it not to be.
Last year the crop of Euros didn't have a ton of size but this year 10 of the 45 Russians listed are 6'3" or greater... and you all know what that means.
**First pass through the list:
Lightning go Canadian Jr. early to look for help along the wing, specifically in the "Q" (a ton of big wingers in the Q this year) and "O" before dipping into the huge amount of big d-men in this draft from the WHL and Russia.
Player I want for the name alone: While he's no Robin Big Snake, Michael Funk of Portland. 6'3.5" 188 lbs, lefty shot, and dying for a marketing campaign involving James Brown and several fine female backup singers. 24GP 0-10-10, E, 23 PIMs, and he has the ability to "get up off of that thing". Drawbacks: I've seen his picture. The puckbunnies will be on him like flies on stink. :joker:

exterminator-x 01-02-2004, 09:16 AM *sigh* I wish we could be as savvy as the Devils.
We could have... we could have Team Canada's point leader in Anthony Stewart who has 8 points in 4 games... but at the expense of only getting Smaby instead of Egener, Smaby, and Stillman.
Savvy Option #1
1. Anthony Stewart
2. Matt Smaby
3. Jonathon Boutin
Savvy Option #2
2. Mike Egener
2. Matt Smaby
2. Cory Stillman
3. Jonathon Boutin
Which savvy you like better?
Erack82 01-02-2004, 11:12 AM Stillman was nice yes. I ment drafting though. A good chunk of their team was originally from the draft....Pandolfo, Neidermayer, Brylin, Brodeur, Schwab, White, Elias, Bicek, Gomez, Gionta, and Rupp.
They had arguably one of the better drafts this past year IMO. Parise who is the real deal, and to move up in the draft to get him was a greaet move for them. Vrana, Khomotov, and Tenute all show promise.
It is great to see our own guys in Kubina, Lecavalier, Richards, and Cibak. It just would be great to get more of a base (hopefully in the near future) from our own picks in the draft. Alot of that again has to do with acquiring our own AHL team. Albany has developed tons of guys who are playing in the NHL now. This is something we sorely need.
petec1978* 01-02-2004, 08:54 PM It would've cost the Lightning their 2nd to move up to get Parise though, meaning not only would they have not gotten their replacement for Prospal but they wouldn't have gotten a d-man until late in the 3rd either.
I'm watching Cory Sarich quietly become an absolute beast of a defender, and then I look at Egener and Smaby who are sort of Sarich clones and I think this trade down is going to look a lot better than it may on paper once we see these guys fully developed in 4-5 years time. They're not pretty on the scoresheet, you don't take these guys home to your mother... but they're going to be a ***** and a half to play against.
I've heard fans in this market complain for a decade now we don't have any big nasty porch clearing physical d-men. We could have a slew of them in the near future.
