This game is gonna be a battle of discipline. USA will need to play a tight checking game to beat Finland's superior speed, and Finland will have to play the tight checking game they have been playing to combat USA's superior talent. Also, USA will have to go out of its way to stay out of the penalty box - America has a penchant for bad penalties, combined with the entire Finland team possessing the inherent Finnish trait of being able to agitate anybody. I hope Finland plays Ruutu - he could easily draw Tkachuk into punching him in a scrum, drawing a roughing, to counter any even-strength momentum the US might gain.

I predict a close game with USA winning 3-2. Modano will be the first star with one goal. Kiprusoff won't play a spectacular game, but enough to keep Finland in it.

I hope Finland plays Ruutu

J.Ruutu plays in fouth line. It will tonight be in form of Nieminen-Hahl- J.Ruutu. Now we will see how this line works. Many finns wanted/expected to see this line already games played in Europe, but it didn`t happen. Naturally this line has to come out with physical appereance and mentally disturb USAs top line(s). Ruutu played ok against Chech and Germany, but he wasn`t like I expected. Nieminen played invisble against Germany in semis, but in the other hand the hole team played like grap. Hahl haven`t shown up earlier, but I expect him to bring some size, muscle and defensively orientated game to this line.

I can`t make my mind which one will win this. The crucial thing is has Finland recovered from Niinimaa`s leaving. If Finland plays like against Germany, we have no hope, but if we play like earlier in this tournament USA needs to play perfect game to stop us.

Padawan
09-10-2004, 08:13 AM
At last the fourth line will be in the mold it should have been at start of this tournament. J. Ruutu - Hahl - Nieminen. Kipper will continue to shine but even Kipper will help us win of the other member of team Finland is still as spiritless as it was in the game against Germany.

Team USA is going to be the toughest opponent in this tournament for us. The likes of Guerin, Tkachuk, Modano, Rafalski and Chelios are all world class hockey players. When you're up against a team with these kind of individuals who plays together like a team should you have to be awake since the puck drops to the point the buzzer tells the game is over. I too have a bad feeling about this but I am also a guy that believes in miracles. I win is a possibility but it will take everything Team Finlands got and a little bit more IF Team Finland has the fighting spirit and heart of a lion I've accustomed to see from them in situations like this one.

Fatigue will be a huge factor in this game. The Finns will tire by the third period and only Kiprisoffs heroics will keep it close. The U.S. will dominate but only win by a 4-2 margin!

The goaltender situation is quite equal, Eche has been really good, specially on both games against russia and also in against Canada. Kipper same solid performance night after night.

So does finnish defense have enough mussle to stop the USA.
And is USA defense as fast as Finns offence.

No predictions.

I'm hoping for a finnish victory but I think it's going to be very close. The americans have the home ice advantage and north american refs and they are often more clutch than the finns so I'll give them the victory, but this is not an impossible task for the finns.

A half hour from now, I'll be watching the pregame skate. If you see a big guy wearing a Boundary Waters Canoe Area T-shirt underneath a green Hawaiian shirt, wave at your TV. That's me! I promise to wave back.

Here's hoping for a game for the ages, because it's probably the last NHL-level hockey I'll see this year. I'm pumped! I'll check in on the thread when I get home.

USA will get a power play. Why Aki Berg is on the ice is beyond me...

We knew this would happen.

The wrong pair was out on the ice, it was Rafalski and Martin and not Leetch and Miller.

Bill Clemente pointed out on the Saku goal that it wasn't the Martin-Rafalski matchup Ron Wilson had been running with all game long. Miller and Leetch were out there on the play, but it still was careless coverage by Tony Amonte.

Bill Clement is a stooge that's impossible to listen to. The fact that you are trying to find insight in his comment is problem #1.

Promblem #2 is that he couldn't get his lips of Leetch's **** long enough to realize that he lost the game for them.

As I'm on record :) as stating before the tourney: A Canada-Finland Final coming up.

Finland obviously has the goaltending, blueliners and defensive forwards to win low scoring hockey games. My only doubt was their ability to score clutch goals, but that hasn't been a problem.

By the way, only 2 % of over 75,000 voters at the nhl.com poll picked Finland to win it all (over 15% picked Slovakia).

I considered the Finns to be way underrated.

Though Canada will still take it all in the end, :yo: as predicted before the tourney, 4-1 over Finland.

I'd also be cautious if I was Canadian taking the Czechs for granted. I'm not so sure it will be a walk in the park for the Canadians. The Czechs play like Slovakia, but there's a few differences:

Czechs have a real goalie.
The Czechs have more than one good defenseman.
The Czechs are overall much deeper than Slovakia.
They still possess mad offensive skills even if Jagr should be forced to sit it out.

Nice game tonight. Very defensive-minded, but not necessarily boring.

I don't usually root for USA just because I live here, and I wasn't tonight (and throughout the tournament). I just can't stand players like Tkachuk and Guerin - as NHL players, not because of their nationality - and I like players like T. Ruutu, Koivu, Selanne, and many other Finns. So I was rooting for Finland, and I'm very happy with the result.

I was rooting for Slovakia first in the whole thing, and probably Finland second, even though Mario is on Canada and I like many Canadian players.

And of course, it's already Finland Silver medal, Canada Gold medal, the Czechs will just forfeit.

Iginla's no cheap player. Tough, but not cheap. It is true that Thornton is a punk cheapshot artist, and I can't stand him, but I've had a hate-on for Tzachuk since the mid-90s, and Hull has utterly disgusted me with his behaviour this tournament, so I just wanted to see the little guys from Finland, and especially Saku, beat these guys.

No hard feelings. Congrats on post 1000.

Well thats an acceptable explanation. :thumbu:

[sarcasm on]Wow Tito_Ortiz, so much class [sarcasm off]. You're acting like a child for having the USA lose in a tight game, way to go. And of course, it's already Finland Silver medal, Canada Gold medal, the Czechs will just forfeit.

There's no medals.

What about the Canadian ones? I don't understand that... there are no cockier fans in hockey than Canadian hockey fans.
Correction: there are no cockier fans in sports than Canadian hockey fans.

I don't get this whole Canadian animosity against America.

If you ever figure it out, let me know.

They started to question their dominance after 1996 and then the crushing loss to the Czechs afterwards in the olympics. Now they are brash and brazen then ever & shaking their tailfeathers. :dunno:

We have a right ro be cocky; we're the best. :D

For how long? By my account they dont have that stellar of a record in international tournaments. They are good, but best could be debatable. Soviets were good for awhile.
