Rookie TournamentProfessor John Frink 09-10-2004, 01:33 AM Here is a place to post everything and talk about all information relating to the rookie tournament. 190Octane 09-10-2004, 02:08 AM Ducks lost tonight 3-2 in OT, Clarke scored for the Kings when a breakout pass bounced off him right onto his stick. Overall, the Ducks outshot the Kings 29-21 in regulation and for the last two periods the play was pretty much in the Kings end. Some observations: -Glencross scored a sick goal where he deked the Kings defender and put in a backhand just inside the far post. -Kanko for the Kings was the best player on the ice in my opinion. Quick skater with good moves. -The ice at Disney Ice was horrible.. ruined lots of scoring chances because the puck wouldn't stay still. The rink just wasn't made for NHL size players going full speed. The net wouldn't stay on it's moorings and the various doors around the rink kept opening when there was a big crunch on the boards, which there were many. -In a post earlier this week or two weeks ago regarding Zenon Konopka, I asked what he does well for being 6'0 190. The answer I got tonight was hustle. He was in the mix a lot and throwing big hits. I think he could eventually be a 4th line pain in the ass for a lot of people. I definitely like his style, good signing. -Getzlaf for me didn't live up to the hype. Also, I thought it was kind of funny that in a 2-2 game late in the 3rd period, he was pointing his stick at the girl in front of me taking pictures, at least that's what it appeared to me he was doing. -Corey Perry slew-footed one of the Kings goalies, which I found mildly amusing.. strangely enough the Kings players didn't think the same way. -Judging by that game, I don't think Perry or Getzlaf have what it takes to be stars in the NHL. I know it's only one game but I wasn't too impressed. -Tim Brent is a very smart player, I'm glad we got him signed. -Aaron Rome hurt either his knee or his ankle and had to be helped off the ice during the 2nd intermission. Hopefully it isn't too serious but I'm willing to bet it is. The loudmouth behind me said he got hit on the front of his knee so do with that what you will. If anyone has any questions, let me know and I'll answer them as well as I can... and if I can't I'm sure someone else who was there probably will be able to. Randall Graves* 09-10-2004, 02:25 AM thanks for the report, i'm sure many of the players would get disinterested or lose intensity if the conditions are as you said. MightyMatt 09-10-2004, 02:49 AM Thanks for the report Vish. I was anxiously waiting all night. medi 09-10-2004, 03:28 AM Can anyone tell me what were the Ducks lienups in the first game??? Schlep Rock 09-10-2004, 10:07 AM How did Canzanello look? He's signed by Cincy FYI. MightyMatt 09-10-2004, 11:21 AM Did Gabriel Bouthillette start in goal? If so, how did he look? And also how did Jordan Smith look out there? 190Octane 09-10-2004, 11:31 AM How did Canzanello look? Not bad.. he had a lot of PP time. Small but quick little player who drove to the net in OT. Kind of reminds me of Mike Crowley a little bit for some reason. Did Gabriel Bouthillette start in goal? If so, how did he look? And also how did Jordan Smith look out there? Yes Bouthillette did start in goal. At first I thought, "wow, this guy sucks." Kanko scored the first goal on a rolling puck which is tough for any goalie to pick up. I can't remember exactly how Clarke scored his first goal, but I do recall that once Bouthillette started to settle down, he looked good. He absolutely robbed a King player point blank with his glove. Jordan Smith looked pretty decent. I thought he'd see more power play time than he did but he impressed me by winning a fight and playing physical. He's not a big player but he doesn't back down. David A. Rainer 09-10-2004, 12:14 PM but I do recall that once Bouthillette started to settle down, he looked good. He absolutely robbed a King player point blank with his glove. That was a sweet save. I was fortunate enough to be sitting right in front of it at the time. It was one of those where the player is not more than ten feet away from the goalie, rips a wrister into an open top corner, and the goalie just sticks out his glove and snags it from behind his head just before getting past the goal plane. It was nice! Fighter 09-10-2004, 01:25 PM Any recap of the fight? Old Hickory 09-10-2004, 02:43 PM Barr and Smith squared off for a fight at the 18:55 mark in the first. Barr had three solid shots in on Smith, they wrestled for a bit, then Smith came back with some booming hooks. To add to it, Barr had the upper hand early, Smith really did a good job in tying him up and out muscling him and just took over. Smith ended up clobbering him....badly This was early on http://www.letsgokings.com/copper/albums/userpics/rookie1/IMG_3323.jpg Kick Save 09-10-2004, 03:26 PM -Getzlaf for me didn't live up to the hype. ************************************************** ************* -Judging by that game, I don't think Perry or Getzlaf have what it takes to be stars in the NHL. I know it's only one game but I wasn't too impressed. ************************************************** ************* You're going to extrapolate from the very first exhibition game of the year (for rookies) that ". . . neither Perry nor Getzlaf have what it takes to be stars in the NHL"? Suppose Barry Bonds had gone 0-for-4 in his first rookie game? Would you have written him off? Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Mario LeMieux and Newsy Lalonde all had bad games. If the only time you saw Gretzky, he had a bad game, would you conclude that he wasn't All-Star material? I don't think anyone can begin to formulate a reasonable opinion of a player's ability without seeing him play at least a dozen times. Chistov23 09-10-2004, 04:19 PM Thanks for the report. Hopefully getzlaf and perry will play better tonight. Did Penner or Saunders stand out at all? McDonald19 should have some thoughts on the game as I think he was going to the first 2 days. I was a litte disappointed with picking Smith in the 2nd round, mostly because I had never heard of him but he seems to be a very solid prospect. Kevin Forbes 09-11-2004, 12:04 AM LA absotively cleaned PHX 11-2 After 1 period, ANA is leading SJ 2-1 goals from the usuals (Glencross and Perrault) Kevin Forbes 09-11-2004, 01:22 AM Anaheim exploded in the 2nd and now lead 6-2 after two Bobby Ryan Getzlaf 09-11-2004, 01:39 AM Anaheim exploded in the 2nd and now lead 6-2 after two Who scored the goals? They'll give the scoring once the game's over. Randall Graves* 09-11-2004, 03:54 AM Glenncross had two goals tonight, Getzlaf added four assists, O'Brien,Perry,Pohanka and Perrault each had a goal apiece. Boutilliete saved 30 of 32 shots. Petr Kanko absolutely owned the Yotes he had 4 goals and an assist. Randall Graves* 09-11-2004, 04:03 AM I saw on another board that a Kings player was severly hurt, who was it and what happened? Rainer 09-11-2004, 04:20 AM I saw on another board that a Kings player was severly hurt, who was it and what happened? Beau Geisler, an invitee. Did not see what happened, but I think he took a slash or a boarding. McDonald19 09-11-2004, 06:57 AM Some observations: -Glencross scored a sick goal where he deked the Kings defender and put in a backhand just inside the far post. -Kanko for the Kings was the best player on the ice in my opinion. I loved the Glencross-Getzlaf-Perry line. 2)I hate Kanko. He reminds me of Cammaleri, good scorer, small guy that talks crap and then runs away when challenged to fight. 3)Agreed. The ice sucked and the goal moving constantly was annoying. 4)I agree about Konopoka, I have more to say about him in my game 2 report. 5)Offensively Getzlaf wasn't great in game 1 but what I noticed about him was leadership. He looked like he deserved the C. He looked like he was the "man". I liked that. He brought his offense out in game 2 though. 6)They both looked better in game 2. 7)funny I barely noticed Brent in either game. He was quiet. 8)Great to see Rome back for game 2. McDonald19 09-11-2004, 07:16 AM Game 2 report: lines: Glencross-Getzlaf-Perry Parenteau-Perrault-Penner Stepp-Brent-Gibbons Konopka-Pohanka-Kelly The first two lines stayed the same the 3rd and 4th lines were mixed a little. The D pairings were changed throughout. O'Brien-Smith-Saunders-Rome-Canzanello-Alen Staubitz and Davis were the scratches. Davis hasn't played yet. I asked him after game 1 when I got his autograph if he was going to play tomorrow and he said he hoped so. Offense: Getzlaf: He was great. Had a couple of great passes to set up goals and often dominated when he was out there. I'm not sure if he has the offensive upside to be a first line center, but he will at least be a really good second line center/captain/team leader. Perry: Finally got on the score sheet. Played much better today. Good chemistry with his linemates. Played aggressive. Threw a hit that led to a Smith fight. Skating and strength need improvement. Hands and vision are good. If he puts in the necessary work then I see him as a good second line winger. Glencross: Exceeded my expectations. Wheels, hands, aggressiveness. He is ticketed for the NHL. 2nd/3rd liner. Parenteau: Creative player. With him and Perrault you can tell the full year in the AHL made them more confident. Speed, hands, a little meanstreak. Could be an NHL 2nd liner if he keeps improving. Perrault: same as Parenteau. Penner: Good size, made room for his linemates. Not sure about scoring touch yet. Tim Brent: He was quiet out there in my opinion. Not a lot of offense from him. Made the smart plays on penalty kill etc. Stepp: Solid, checker , penalty killer. Definetly could be a solid 3rd liner in the NHL at some point. Gibbons: 18 yr old tryout didn't look out of place. Aggressive, creative player. Hard to say what kind of player he will be long term. Kelly: Tryout, least noticeable player out there. Didn't do anything great nor anything stupid. Pohanka: Used his size pretty well. Had a nice goal. long term project I think. Konopka: This guy was great! Not sure about his offensive upside yet. In the Kings game he was skating by their bench all game talking crap it was great. In the Sharks game during warm ups he goes out the center ice and stretches right next to their enforcer and talks back and forth with him and they fight twice in the game. The guys face looked all messed up during the post game autograph session. If the Ducks are looking for an agitator long term Konopka is the guy. McDonald19 09-11-2004, 07:26 AM defense: Smith: Very nice 2nd round choice by Coates. Smith could be the Adam Foote type that the Ducks have always lacked. Perry got floored in game 1. Smith took the # went after the guy later and challenged him to fight, he backed out and another King stepped in and got beat up for his trouble. Game 2 Perry hit a Shark from behind and the Shark challenged Perry to fight, Smith came right in and dropped the gloves. His defensive abilities looked solid as well. Saunders: Big D-Man was quiet in game 1. Got more agressive in game 2. One of the Sharks was messing with Parenteau and Saunders came over and dropped the gloves and the Shark backed off. Needs some skating work and more work on positioning but he brings a lot to the table. O'Brien: Big Mean Defensemen. Won his fight but was ejected because the fight occured during stoppage of play. Seemed like a cool guy when I talked to him after the game. Needs work on his skating. Rome: He was solid but didn't do a whole lot worth noticing. Good to see he recovered from game 1 injury. Alen: Solid D-Man. Uses his size well, plays physical, moves the puck. Should be a 2nd or 3rd pairing D-Man in the NHL in 2 years. Staubitz and Canzanello: Besides Canzanello's giveaway that gave the Kings a win in game 1, they both looked decent. McDonald19 09-11-2004, 07:35 AM Misc. thoughts: -Our prospect team shows more team toughness and team togetherness than our NHL team. They actually care about eachother unlike the NHL guys. -Andy McDonald, Mike Leclerc, Alexei Smirnov, Steve Rucchin, UFA Travis Green and New Jersey Devil Jeff Friesen were having an informal practice on the Olympic rink before game 1. I took a picture with Leclerc and McDonald  , they both were really cool. -Speaking of McDonald, the official gossip about him and Lupul from last year is that McDonald and Lupul were caught in the hottub at the Pond with 2 powerplayer girls and the girls were fired and McDonald and Lupul fined 5000 each. -There are new Powerplayer girls and they all look 16 yrs old. -Wild Wing was annoying and the guy who was doing the trivia during the intermissions was particularly annoying. -All the prospects seemed really cool at the autograph session. I took a picture with Getzlaf and he seems like such a goofy guy that now I see why his line at the World Junior Champs was called "goof troop line". Perry was cool, he seems really skinny without his gear on, they need to feed him and make him spend hours working out. McDonald19 09-11-2004, 07:36 AM If you have any questions about day 1 and 2 of the tournament let me know. I'm not going to day 3 and 4 so someone else will have to give reports. He drew two powerplays against in game 1 against the Ducks and another two in game 2 against the Coyotes. He's one of those players that fans of 29 other teams HATE, but the hometown fans just love. If he was in a Ducks jersey, you'd be raving about the guy. David A. Rainer 09-11-2004, 04:31 PM Gibbons: 18 yr old tryout didn't look out of place. Aggressive, creative player. Hard to say what kind of player he will be long term. I was sitting next to his grandfather on Thursday. Flew in from a rainy Toronto. Proud of his grandson as all hell! But he missed two no one within ten feet of him, wide open nets. Grand-dad just laughed and said "oh well, he's young". He'll fight when the time is right in the game. If it's a situation where a penalty will really help, he'll draw it. But if it is a blow-out one way or the other, he'll drop gloves. Basically, what agitators do. McDonald19 09-11-2004, 10:50 PM If he was in a Ducks jersey, you'd be raving about the guy. possibly, but I prefer agitators who back up the talk with their fists such as Zenon Konopka. I think if someone is small like Kanko and has that scoring ability, just keep your mouth shut and score goals because otherwise your just risking getting hurt out there by some 6'5 220 pounder who gets angry. mmbt 09-11-2004, 10:59 PM No I played alright. Last season it was Jordan Smith constantly going after Perry and getting jumped for his troubles... now Smith's the one who's standing up for Perry. It'll be interesting to see how they compete against one another next year, assuming they both end up back in the OHL. And I agree Smith was a steal in the second round of a not so great draft year. He impresses me every time I see him and it's no surpise he's playing a tough brand of hockey during this tourny. Boomhower 09-12-2004, 12:43 AM possibly, but I prefer agitators who back up the talk with their fists such as Zenon Konopka. You're going to hate Corey Perry than. He can put up points in bunches, but that doesn't stop him from doing anything and everything to piss off opposing players and rarely ever dropping the gloves. Kanko's a very good leader and his work ethic is outstanding. He gets in guys faces, but he will also fight when push comes to shove... I've never really heard of him turtling and have seen him step in and drop the gloves to stick up for a teammates before. David A. Rainer 09-14-2004, 02:55 AM also Smith won a big fight apparently... You were misinformed. If anything, that fight was draw if not a win by Neilson. Even if you are just counting cleanly landed punches, Neilson wins 2-1. The fight started with the square-off. Once they were within arms-length, Neilson immediately landed a HUGE left to Smith's chin, snapping Smith's head back and causing a collective "ooooooooo" from the crowd. After he recovered, they grabbed ahold of each other and wretled for a bit. Then each freed up a right hand and started wailing on each other. Smith then managed to land a clean right to Neilson's face, but Neilson followed that up with a clean right of his own to Smith's face (they obviously were not too concerned with defense in this fight ;) ). Then they wrestled again and each delivered some sweater-holding jabs. The refs wanted to come in and break it up at that moment but Neilson was screaming "no, let us go!" The refs backed off and let them continue, but they just wrestled around for a little more and the two let go of each other in exhaustion. It was a back and forth fight, probably would have scored it a 10-9 in favor of Neilson if it was a boxing match on the strength of that first blow which was AWESOME. Smith left the ice covered in blood. I did not get a chance to see Neilson, but I would imagine he was pretty bloody too. Neilson had been jarring with Saunders and O'Brien from the penalty box during the 2nd period. When Saunders and Neilson were both in the box in the 2nd period, Saunders leaned out of the box, looked at Neilson in the other box, and said "again". Neilson gave an approving look and sat back in the box. It sounded like Neilson had some scores to settle. But besides that, the Ducks took it to a listless Kings team that looked tired and ready to go home by the 2nd period. Ducks just fed off of that and turned up the physical play. dafranchz 09-14-2004, 03:15 AM I have to concur with DFA, Neilson got him really good.
