Random offseason MLB trade thoughts

Might be a little premature to already be talking about potential deals/signings in the winter.....but I just thought of one that might work out for both sides:

Oakland: 2B Marcus Giles
Atlanta: LHP Barry Zito

The A's could use an offensive 2nd baseman (they've been rumored to rent Jeff Kent and Placido Polanco). They probably only have enough money to lockup two of Mulder/Hudson/Zito long term. Rich Harden is progressing nicely.

In terms of Moneyball, the A's will probably look to replace the offensive production lost by Dye/Scutaro. Swisher/Giles could possibly match that.

Atlanta is potentially going to lose Russ Ortiz and Jaret Wright to free agency. Nick Green has been serviceable in his 200+ ABs this year while Giles was hurt. They'd pick up a young lefty who already has a Cy Young on his resume. Zito would make less that Ortiz, and the Braves could use that extra money to keep J.D. Drew around.

Anyways, feel free to discuss anything else you might see going down.......or what your team will probably look to do before next season.

No way that will go down, as a Marlins fan I hope that doesn't go down.

From the A's perspective I would welcome that deal with open arms. We haven't had a productive 2B in a very long time.

I was pretty upset when the whole Kent deal fell through. It was pretty much a sure thing him coming over but then the Astros got back into the race and that was the end of that.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Zito will be gone this offseason. And personally I will be happy to see him go. With Harden getting better everyday, Zito has become expenable as our #3 starter. I had heard a lot of rumors before the trade deadline of him going to the O's for Hairston or Roberts, which I wasn't too thrilled about but luckily that never happened.

For the Rangers:

1. Soriano will be gone- Still the best 2B in the AL, but he K's too much, and his defense is barely average. Kinsler(AA SS hit .350 between A and AA) may be brought up and Michael Young moved back to 2B...or we'll sign a free agent SS. Need to find someone who will trade a solid pitcher or a top prospect or 2 for Alfonso.
2. Sign a pitcher- Wont be a top of the line guy, as Hicks tried that before with Chan Ho...hopefully someone like Carl Pavano
3. A bat- Someone with a high on-base %....most of the team is below the AL average.
4. Stay healthy- Need a full season from Colby Lewis, Juan Dominguez, Ricardo Rodriguez, Laynce Nix, Mark Teixiera(best AB per HR ratio in the AL)

Would Oakland take Belliard + mid level prospect for Zito from Cleveland?

Personally I would rather see pickup someone up with a little more pop in their bat. I would prefer to see Giles or Kent.

Your yard is a big doubles park. Belliard has 46 here with Cleveland. He's a solid, underrated player. Hustles game in and game out and plays a real deep second base to compensate for his lack of range. I think he'd be a good fit.

That's true. He could be a good guy to put in the 2 hole in between Kotsay and Chavez. But Kent is more attractive to me because he would be a perfect fit in our cleanup spot and then Durazo to follow him. But Belliard is not a bad option and would no doubt be a lot cheaper then Kent.

Well, it works from an Indians standpoint because we'll have Vizquel money for Zito's raise over Belliard's current salary. Two, we have Aaron Boone who can play 2nd, Jhonny Peralta (IL MVP) can play short, and leave Blake at third. Jason Davis has been moved to the bullpen, so we're looking to spend money on starting pitching. Belliard's just an expendable asset at this point, and his big year helps. He also terrorizes LHP, that could be a big selling point on him. I think Crosby could develop into a cleanup hitter for you guys in a year or two.

If Arty Moreno keeps spending for the Angels, look for them to eye up Pedro Martinez. They have Colon and Washburn, who are two very good pitchers, but could really use a better ace. They're going with a 4 man rotation now, so if they were to pick up Pedro or some other ace, they could go back to 5 if they wished, and would definetely have a strong starting five to match their very good bullpen:

Martinez
Washburn
Colon
Escobar
Lackey

Would definetely be one of the better starting fives out there. Moreno seems willing to spend, so it's not out of the question. Would definetely push the Angels over the top overall.
