AHL eligibility and the Ducks

These two (http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/hurricanes/story/1614033p-7824064c.html) articles (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Ottawa/2004/09/08/620507.html) point to the abolishment of the rumored 50 game AHL limit for next season. So only general waiver rules (http://www.sj-sharks.com/sharks/news/20021001-1033509560.htm) and the age limit (only players born in 1984 and later can be assigned to the AHL) apply.
What that means for Anaheim is that the following players can be sent to Cincy and not need to pass through waivers:
15 Forwards:
Joffrey Lupul
Stanislav Chistov
Mikael Holmqvist
Tim Brent
Cory Pecker
Joel Perrault
Chris Kunitz
Igor Pohanka
Alexei Smirnov
Curtis Glencross
Dustin Penner
Joel Stepp
George Davis
Pierre Parenteau
Zenon Konopka

7 Defensemen:
Tomas Malec
Kurtis Foster
Juha Alen
Aaron Rome
Sheldon Brookbank
Mark Popovic
Shane O'Brien

2 Goalies:
Ilya Bryzgalov
Eddie Ferhi

We could potentially have a strong team for Cincy

Was Tomas Malec acquired in exchange for Gerber?

yes, along with a 3rd rounder in 2004 (Kyle Klubertanz)

Cincy definetely looks strong for next year. I still wish they'd keep Keith Aucoin, though. In the games I watched, he was awesome.

doesn't appear to be much room for him, if there's a lockout
even if there isn't, I would expect the Ducks will only add depth players and let the prospects get the majority of ice time.

So, does that mean that my analysis about chistov and lupul going to the minors was correct?

Kevin Forbes

not completely, the rule that was proposed was thrown out, so Lupul and Chistov wouldn't need to be assigned before the CBA expiry. So it's something that neither of us accounted for.
I would call it a tie, due to technicality ;)

If Cincy is that strong then I consider that bad news.

Actually, they do have to be assigned prior to Sept. 15. After that date there is no longer a CBA under which assignment can occur. Mark my words, it will happen prior to Sept. 15.

That's one heck of a team. Go Cincy! :yo:

I like the way you moderate the board. You are obviously aware of the team and the players and know what you are talking about. You will find that I do not post a ton, but when I do, I will know exactly what I am talking about. I will enjoy watching Lupul and Chistov developing in Cincinnati while everyone else is falling behind and not skating. Look forward to future discussions.

I'm not the moderator, just the team writer at HF
regardless, I tip my hat to you

Are there any West Coast AHL teams? Will the Cincy Ducks play any games in California?

no...closest would be Utah I think...

ECHL has San Diego and other teams though.

If it's legal, the Ducks should arrange for Cincy to play four games or so in Anaheim, just to show them what's in store for the future and such.

Interesting you mention that Herc,
today's OC Register has this tidbit

The Ducks also are looking into the possibility of scheduling one or more AHL games involving Cincinnati at Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.

IF you consider Utah the west coast.

As for the Cincy team out here....might not be a bad idea. The Kings are hosting their affiliate (Manchester Monarchs) in a contest against Phoenix's AHL team (Utah). It will take place on October 23rd at the Staples Center.

Our Cincy team might sound good. But Ottawa is going to play Spezza and Hasek in the AHL this season.

Spezza's good, but Hasek is not a big deal now. He will play 20 games at best before injure himself again.
Strange, I thought he would play in his native Czech Republic.

Does Hasek still have his legal issues?

Also, I would think that they wouldn't play any AHL games due to the fact that only the diehards would show up resulting in a not very big turnout, but any games the Baby Ducks play at the Pond, I will be there for sure.
