Where is the media attention?

I went to a bunch of sports sites like CNN and other sites (primarily American). And I noticed that when I click on hockey I find either barely anything or nothing at all on the World Cup! Whats up with this? I had a good feeling that the WC wasnt getting as much interest and I thought but I never thought it would be this low. :speechles

its a joke of a tournament. I was excited about the world cup at first, but when there was 0 qualifying, only 8 teams, and every team advances regardless of how poorly they played, you have a joke of a tournament. 8 frickin teams, I mean come on, and they all advance. Slovakia and Germany have gone a combined 0-6, yet bot have as good a shot at winning it all as Canada or Finland. This essentially amounts to nothing more than an off-season exhibition.

Obviously Americans just don't like any sports that they suck at. And currently, USA sucks at ice hockey. I hope Russia will beat the (censored) out of team USA in the QFs.

What other teams do you want to participate? All the other teams in the world are weaker than Germany, the reason that there is only 8 teams is that those teams are the only one's good enough to face Canada, Russia, Finland etc.... It wouldn't be interesting to have a bunch of teams getting routed every game.

Were you tricked ito thinking it would be different somehow?
If you didn't even know what the format of the tournament was, you couldn't have been very excited about it. :dunno:

This is just the same as the Olympics. All 6 big teams were pretty much prequalified.

Americans suck at ice hockey? I guess being the only country to medal at this years four major IIHF tournaments sucks eh? I guess winning a silver medal at the SLC Olympics or gold at this years WJC's sucks eh? Whatever. :shakehead

Yeah, I mean the lack of coverage in the U.S. is just non-existent:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/feature/featureStory?page=2004worldcup

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/nhl/

http://www.sportsline.com/nhl

http://www.usahockey.com/usa_hockey/international/04worldcup/04worldcup/

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/front.htm

http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl

I know Canadians want to take potshots everytime they get, but the idea the World Cup is being ignored is an outright lie.

The only country? Canada is the reigning men's and women's world champion, the under 18 world champion and won a silver at the WJC. Is there something else I'm missing?

I was mistaken, this article highlights the U.S. finishing in the top three at the five Pool A IIHF Tournaments over the 2003-2004 year:

The one most people would gloss over is inline.

The tournament could possibly be expanded to include 10 or 12 teams (Belarus, Switzerland, Kazhakstan, etc.) That way the round robin would mean a little something, with the weaker teams fighting it out to get into the QF's.

If we stick with 8 teams, I would like to see it structured so that only the top 3 of 4 advance, with the first place team in each pool getting a by and automatically going to the SF's, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams play a QF. Just my thoughts.

Maybe it is a joke tourny in some people's minds but I myself have really enjoyed it. Sure, some of the star players may be sitting out and the format may not be the greatest, but it's been so great to watch hockey again.

There's been alot of entertaining hockey played this past week and I hope it gets better as the elimination process begins.

And as we all know, this could be the last hockey for a long, long time :shakehead

You want proof of lack of coverage and interest. I just got back from Vegas and no one is accepting betting on the WC! I tried just about every sportsbook in Vegas and no one was accepting bets. I had to almost bribe the guy to put it on the screen so that I could sit there with my Team Canada jersey and cheer it on in the casino!

Thanks to limiting the amount of countries, I've been seeing excellent hockey at the World Cup. It is 10x better than the World Championship. If what you want is to see teams with lower skills, than stick to the latter.

Please.

If you look at the three important tournaments where the best players are actually available to play, the USA has the best result of any country in the world. The USA is the defending World Cup champion, the Olympic silver medalists and the defending World Junior Champion. No one has a better overall result in tourneys that really matter and where the best players play.

The timing of the tournament is horrendously bad for marketing in the States. To recount:

1. Only a month left in the baseball season. Pennant and wild card races abound.

2. NFL season kicks off this week. The big dog is back on the block. Hopefully the NHL is smart enough to avoid Sunday like the plague.

3. In the lead-up to the first games everyone was paying attention to the Olympics.

and finally....

4. The Americans are playing their home games in Minneapolis. I love Minnesota, have been through many times and these are people who love hockey. But as far as a national media centre Minneapolis ranks pretty far down the totem pole. Even if you discount Boston and New York because of political conventions you would still have Chicago, Philadelphia or Detroit. All hockey cities with more media centres than Minneapolis.

The NHL is a bush league at this point. Every single story I've seen on ESPN or SI has basically been in the "last chance to see hockey because the NHL and the NHLPA can't get their act together" vein.

I'm through being saddened or apathetic about the state of the league. I'm officially choked. They have dragged this great league down into the mud and through the gutter with dumb rules that are never enforced, dubious disciplinary procedures and schoolyard level name-calling that passes for negotiation played out in the media. Then they take a tournament with a sparkling reputation and revive it for the sake of marketing and more money.

Frankly I'm disgusted with the players and the league at this point. I still watch the hockey, but the minute there is any interview or speculation by a talking head I change the channel. I do not need any more smoke up my anal cavity thank you very much. It was an election year after all.
