What you have to love about the guy is that he's basically fearless out there. He deposits Kane headlong into the players bench; cross-checks McDavid and is probably happy to pay five grand in fines; and he's a menace in his own zone.

But beyond that, when was the last time a Canuck d-men doled out the punishment and then chirped the opposing bench on the way by? He can get a way with it, because nobody is going to challenge him.

As we can see from these playoffs so far, a menacing presence like that is worth his weight in gold.

The thing with Zadorov which isn't the case for Joshua or Lindholm, is that is we re-sign him he has the potential to really play about his contract and be a real cap surplus for us. To put it another way, you could see Zadorov putting it all together like he has this playoffs and turn into, effectively, a top 3 two-way defensemen that is mean and physical, and for the $5 million per year he would be getting, or whatever, that would be an incredible. And his floor is probably the player he was in the regular season, and that's not the end of the world.

With Joshua and Lindholm, I think there is less upside.

He wasn't playing anywhere near this good, possibly because he didn't want to be there anymore. That, and he pretty publicly demanded a trade.

The real irony is Toronto made a better offer but wanted both Zadorov and Tanev and wanted 50% retained on both. We were willing to take Z at full cap.
