If they traded him the previous season, it would’ve looked far better, obviously.
Probably. But recall that numerous people said that Barabanov's lack of experience/pedigree made him an unattractive option for contenders. And in those cases, his contract becomes a hindrance.

It's pretty funny thinking back on how much praise DW got for "fleecing" Toronto out of Barabanov and at the end of the day his Sharks tenure ends up being completely worthless.

Why can the only outcomes be fleecing or worthless? They got several years of middle 6 play instead of the fat nothing Suomela did in the NHL. A Euro FA signing was turned into a roster contributor for several seasons. Why does it reflect on Wilson that Grier didn’t trade Barabanov? And why does Barabanov need to have a hot take attached?

Dude exceeded expectations, and is now on to his next. Cheers, it’s been wild, happy journeys as far as I’m concerned.

Several years of middle six play on some of the worst teams in Sharks history. Hooray.

Grier was literally offering Barabanov around for free right before the deadline and there were zero takers. I wish him success in the KHL.

Good luck on this one. He randomly decided Labanc was better than Barabanov, was proven wrong, then has hated Barabanov since. The reality is Barabanov was an effective player for his first 147 games with the Sharks, especially in 22-23 when he was actually pretty good with decent analytics on a bad Sharks team. Then he absolutely sucked this entire past season (46 games).

His career was super weird though, so its not super surprising to me that he had no trade value. Pretty sure Barabanov was one of the players MG was referring to regarding some RFAs/UFAs slacking on effort, which sucks.

Unlike Barabanov, Labanc will actually get another NHL contract.

We definitely need a top 4 d-man (or two) this summer, but I'd also like us to target Burns next summer. He'd be 40, in elite shape, and would be our best PP option. He's currently better than any RHD available this summer, particularly of the offensive variety. Two seasons from now he's probably a 18 minute offensive/PP specialist, but still worth considering.

Not a bad guy to have as a mentor for whoever our top 5 d-man pick is (unless BPA is a F), and we wouldn't have to pay a huge amount or sign him to massive term. I think he's also better than

Muk-Burns
Schaefer
-Demelo

Ferraro-Emberson

I expect Ferraro gets moved for futures at some point in the next 13 months, though we'll need another vet once he's moved anyway.
I'd be interested in Burns in a heavily sheltered, mentor type of role. I'm not sure I want Muk having to cover for Burns. Maybe reunite Ferraro - Burns and pair Muk with DeMelo?

Will the Sharks know the status of Fresh Prince and Hulkibrini prior to free agency signing period?

Folks that want to bring in Stamkos to mentor... do you still want to sign Stamkos if those two prospects decide to stay another year? What if they decide to stay the year after that also? A bit devil's advocate, but it's not outside of the realm of possibilities.

What's the deadline on the prospects deciding?
That might help affect their decision to turn pro vs return to college? Tell them you'll be playing with Stammer would be exciting to a young player, I think.

Barabanov will too unless he wants to go back to Russia. He's an NHL caliber player with a low AAV signing history and one who has outplayed his contract value each year (this year he missed half the games, but 26pts extrapolated is right on the money for 2.5M). A competing team would love to add him for cheap to their bottom 6

Labanc, OTOH, has consistently underperformed his contract. He will probably get another shot too, but on a different type of team.

Peng's headline from IIHF worlds is that Smith hasn't made up his mind about signing with Sharks or returning to college
I don't suppose my vote would sway him? I want something to root for next year. If the young guys aren't here, even if it's gonna be a tough road to hoe that first year, it's hard for me to convince myself why I shouldn't go back into Shark Fan Hibernation for another year and come out of my cave around draft time. Give us something to want to root for.

Furthermore, even though I'm sure I know less about hockey than everyone else on this forum, I know college hockey has nothing left to surprise these two with. They need a challenge to push them to improve. Staying at a level they already dominate isn't doing them any favors in terms of development.

LOL. So what are you trying to say here, Barabanov is bad because the rest of the team around him was bad? I guess Bedard is a bunch of piece of shit because Chicago was terrible. You should probably go tell their fans, because they seem woefully misinformed.

Why does Barabanov rate your personal animosity? Why do you need him to specifically not be in the NHL next year?

Come on, that's intentionally omitting the key details. There was a trade to NYR for Barabanov that fell through because of retention. Only like NSH could have taken him at full value. Retention and the salary cap barely moving were real struggles with every trade on every team, we have to recognize it being a problem here too.

And that's more a reflection on the market than on Barabanov. Yes his value tanked this year compared to last, but he still had interest.
